WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01) announced $1.4 million for the City of Las Vegas from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve pedestrian safety within the Fremont Street corridor.

“Thanks to funds I secured in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Las Vegas will pilot adaptive technology, significantly reducing pedestrian-related crashes and improving traffic flow along our community’s roadways. I will keep working in Congress to secure funding for projects that help safely move all roadway users around the Valley,” said Rep. Dina Titus.

Background

The City of Las Vegas will receive $1.4 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grant program for the SMARTer and Safer Way to Cross project from the Department of Transportation. This project is investing in artificial intelligence (AI) powered pedestrian detection systems which will allow the appropriate amount of time for street crossings.

The projects will aim to detect pedestrians waiting to cross roads and adjust traffic signal timings and unprotected crossing flasher durations in real-time based on pedestrian volumes and speed to provide a safer crossing time window.

The City of Las Vegas will pilot this project in the vicinity of the Fremont Street corridor – a pedestrian mall in downtown Las Vegas that attracts more than 26 million visitors per year. Fremont Street is a five-block semi-enclosed corridor in which large numbers of pedestrians walk across the intersecting streets and to nearby hotels, casinos, and restaurants.

In October 2023, Rep. Titus led a letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg requesting the application receive full and fair consideration. The letter can be found HERE
