Congresswoman Titus believes we need to prioritize investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy to lead us towards a clean energy economy that will generate jobs and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.
She supported H.R. 2187, the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act, which would authorize funding to upgrade school buildings to make them more energy efficient and more reliant on renewable sources of energy. Not only would investing in green schools create jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy, but modernizing our school buildings would provide healthy learning environments and improve student achievement. Congresswoman Titus offered an amendment to H.R. 2187 to establish an advisory council to recommend federal policies that will help states make schools green. The Titus amendment passed with broad bipartisan support by a vote of 270 to 160.
Congresswoman Titus also supported H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which requires electric utilities to meet 20 percent of their electricity demand through renewable energy sources by 2020; invests in energy efficiency and renewable energy, electric and other advanced technology vehicles, and basic scientific research and development; and protects consumers from energy price increases.
Congresswoman Titus was successful in offering an important amendment to H.R. 2454. The Titus amendment will open the door to government investments in cleaner, more sustainable and ultimately more cost beneficial technologies by extending the limit for federal contracts for the acquisition of electricity generated from a renewable energy resource from 10 years to 20.
