As the Representative of Nevada’s Third District, I am committed to fighting on behalf of the needs of my constituents and my community. Project Description: With the high injury rate among soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan (15 injured for every one killed, estimated to be $600 billion in future liability), development of therapies that prevent tissue injury and enhance wound healing will have a significant impact on the public health of U.S. veterans. Wound healing is delayed by aging, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, immunological defects, and renal disease and adversely affected by viral or bacterial infection, obesity, smoking, radiotherapy, and psychological disturbance. Abnormal wound healing induces re-opening the healed wounds, chronic fibrosis, pain, and disability. Previous studies showed wound healing can be enhanced by a number of ways. A fibronectin peptide can reduce the healing time from 20-42 days to 8 days, while both TGF-beta and estrogen can enhance injured skin healing.
