Titus: New Unemployment Numbers a Reminder that Job Creation Must Be Top Priority

Friday, January 9, 2009

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District released the following statement today on the latest jobs report showing that 2.6 million jobs were lost in 2008, with 525,000 jobs lost in December alone.  The national unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent, while in Nevada unemployment for November was 8 percent.

“Today’s dismal jobs report is another stark reminder that we must take action, and we must take action soon to end this economic crisis and create jobs that put Nevadans back to work.  As the unemployment rate rises across the country, the Third District has been hit especially hard as families struggle to make ends meet.

“From rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure that will help Nevada’s hard hit construction sector to investing in renewable energy that will tap into our region’s abundant resources, it is critical that we make job creation a top priority of this Congress.”
