September 16, 2014 Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District announced that the Las Vegas Metro Police Department has been awarded $305,980 in federal grant funding for their Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit. The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Metro will use the funding to enhance its detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation of children through basic and advanced training for investigators, forensic examiners, and prosecutors. In addition, funds will be used for advanced training of officers in a variety of techniques to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation of children as well as ensure adequate staffing for the ICAC unit. “Our children are our greatest community resource and this funding will help to protect their health and welfare. While technology provides enormous opportunities for academic and economic advancement, it can also be used as a platform by those who wish to prey on our children. This funding will strengthen Metro’s ability to develop and utilize their own technology to go after the bad guys and protect our children and our community. I will continue to advocate for funding to enhance these critical programs." |
