Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District released the following statement today in response to the announcement by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and the Department of Defense of the extension of benefits to same-sex military families. Yesterday’s news follows the letter Congresswoman Titus and 37 of her House colleagues sent to Secretary Panetta urging immediate action to extend benefits and privileges to all service member families.

“Today marks another important milestone in the fight to end institutionalized discrimination in our nation's military. I applaud Secretary Panetta for answering the call to action and for extending benefits to the families of gay and lesbian service men and women.

“As a strong proponent of the repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and an ardent supporter for the extension of benefits to same-sex military families, I believe that all service members, regardless of their sexual orientation, deserve equal recognition, respect, and support for their service to our country.”
