April 2, 2015 Las Vegas, NV - Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will award the Las Vegas Urban Area $3 million as part of the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant program. This grant award is a $2 million increase from last year’s UASI grant allocation. Titus has been actively working with officials from the Department of Homeland Security to increase UASI funding for the Las Vegas metropolitan area. She has also urged DHS to replace the flawed methodology used to make counterterrorism funding decisions so as to better reflect the unique nature of Las Vegas and other cities with a significant number of visitors. “I am glad the Department of Homeland Security has recognized the importance of increasing funding for Las Vegas through the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI). These funds are critical for ensuring the safety of our 1.5 million residents and the 42 million visitors that we welcome every year. I will continue to work with DHS to improve their funding formulas to better evaluate the unique nature of tourist destination cities like Las Vegas.” |
