January 27, 2015 Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District announced passage of a package of bills aimed at combating human trafficking in the United States and around the world. “Human trafficking is a growing concern in our community and across the country. Nearly 21 million people worldwide, including 5.5 million children, are reported victims of human trafficking. In recent years we’ve seen an uptick in cases of human trafficking in Nevada with 82 cases reported to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline in 2014 and 81 the year before. This modern-day slavery must be eradicated from society,” said Titus. “The bills passed this week are important steps toward ending human trafficking by providing needed resources to law enforcement at the international, state, and local levels so they can help support victims, prosecute criminals, and prevent this heinous crime.” January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The following legislation passed as part of this legislative package: Human Trafficking Prioritization Act, the International Megan’s Law to Prevent Demand for Child Sex Trafficking Act, the Human Trafficking Prevention Act, the Enhancing Services for Runaway and Homeless Victims for Youth Trafficking Act, the Strengthening Child Welfare Response to Trafficking Act, the Human Trafficking Detection Act, Human Trafficking Prevention, Intervention, and Recovery Act, the Stop Exploitation Through Trafficking Act, the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, and the Stop Advertising Victims of Exploitation Act, and a bill to improve the response to victims of child sex trafficking. |
