Hellenic Leadership

Her History

Dina’s grandfather, Arthur Costandinos Cathones, arrived at Ellis Island from Greece in 1911. Growing up, Dina spent her free time helping Arthur around his restaurant. Since there was no church or Greek school nearby, her grandfather taught her to count and write the alphabet in Greek and introduced her to wonderful Greek food. When she took the oath of office in Congress, she did so with her hand on her grandfather’s Greek Bible.

As an adult, Dina has embraced her Hellenic heritage. She travels to Greece whenever she can and is an active member of the Greek community in Las Vegas, where she attends St. John the Baptist Church and is involved with the Philoptochos Society and Daughters of Penelope.

Her Work

Dina’s Greek heritage has influenced her perspective on life and the world. In Congress, she sits on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Europe. She is also a member of the Hellenic Caucus and the Hellenic-Israel Alliance Caucus where she advocates for Eastern Mediterranean communities in the U.S. and abroad, including:

  • Co-sponsoring legislation to strengthen the defense partnership between the United States and Greece
  • Advocating for the territorial integrity of Greece and Cyprus against Turkish aggression and occupation
  • Leading letters to the Administration pushing for greater investment in and engagement with Greece to advance our mutual security interests
  • Supporting efforts to protect the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople
  • Advocating for Cyprus to be included in the Visa Waiver Program to facilitate travel and cultural exchange between our countries
  • Championing legislation to end the U.S. arms embargo on Cyprus

She has also increased collaboration among Athens, Nicosia, and Washington by fostering strong relationships with the embassies of Greece and Cyprus.
