As your Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, each year I have the privilege of nominating a limited number of people to four of the five service academies (U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and *U.S. Coast Guard Academy). Upon graduation, cadets earn a Bachelor of Science and a commission as an officer in the U.S. military. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. I applaud you for considering pursuing admission to one of the U.S. Service Academies and serving our country.

The Service Academy Nominee Selection Committee
In order to carry out this responsibility in an objective and nonpartisan manner, I enlist the aid of several distinguished Nevada residents to assist me in making nominations. The volunteers who serve on the First Congressional Service Academy Nominee Selection Committee are appointed on the basis of their interest and experience in the military and in education.
The Selection Process
During the late spring through fall of each year, prospective candidates are invited to submit letters of inquiry to my office. In response, you receive a packet outlining the selection process and an application form to be completed and returned, along with a personal statement outlining your reasons for seeking nomination to a Service Academy. In addition, you must include a transcript of high school grades and rank in class. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and/or American College Testing (ACT) scores can be submitted for consideration. but are not required for this 2023 nomination process. All candidates must also provide three letters of recommendation. You may wish to ask your principal, school guidance counselor, coach, employer, or someone who knows you well (not a relative) to submit a recommendation.
Qualified Candidates
In order to nominate candidates who will meet the high admission standards of the service academies, the Selection Committee considers evidence of sound character, excellent scholarship, leadership potential, worthy goals, and strong motivation. These are qualities required to succeed as a student at the Academies and, following graduation, in service to the nation as a professional officer. Physical aptitude and medical fitness are determined by the academies prior to the offer of appointment.
The Interview
Each candidate will meet privately with selection committee members, who evaluate attributes such as motivation, leadership potential, and communication skills based on candidates' personal statements, recommendations, and their responses to interviewers' questions.
Nomination and Appointment
When interviews have been completed, Committee members meet to choose the most qualified candidates for each available nomination. The objective scores, supplemented by the subjective judgments of the interviewing teams, are evaluated and a slate of ten candidates for each appointment is chosen. (Applicants may be nominated to more than one Academy if the Committee finds them qualified.) The Committee makes its recommendations to me and I share the most qualified applicants’ information with the Academies. The Academies conduct their own evaluations and select from among our nominees those deemed most qualified to fill the vacancies allotted to the First Congressional District. Additional appointments may be offered by the Academies themselves in order to bring the entering classes up to the desired number.
The service academies offer a superb tuition-free education. If you have further questions regarding the service academy nomination process, please contact Daniel Carranza, in the District Office of Congresswoman Dina Titus, at 702-220-9823 or via email at daniel.carranza@mail.house.gov.
