The most recent chemical weapons attack by Assad against his own people is yet another heinous moment in this deadly conflict. April 13, 2018 “The most recent chemical weapons attack by Assad against his own people is yet another heinous moment in this deadly conflict. What is needed now is for the President to lay out a long-term strategy for Syria. I continue to call on the President to come to Congress for a new authorization of the use of military force. Last year the United States engaged in an isolated strike following another chemical attack by Russia-backed Syrian forces. That strike did little to end the violence or prevent continued loss of life. Just last week, the President publicly stated his intent to remove U.S. troops from Syria. Only a long-term strategy in partnership with our NATO allies will bring about a resolution to this conflict. We must also recognize our brave service members who carried out tonight’s operation.” |
