April 29, 2014 Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District wrote the following letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in support of McCarran’s application to participate in the Reimbursable Services Program within the Consolidated Appropriations Act. April 29, 2014 The Honorable Jeh Johnson Dear Secretary Johnson, Thank you for your efforts to facilitate the flow of travelers and commerce into the United States. I especially appreciate that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently increased its staffing at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS). International visitors are an important part of our local economy and we are working to facilitate increasing foreign visits to Southern Nevada, many of whom also go on to visit national parks in neighboring states. In 2013, LAS was listed as the nation’s ninth busiest airport. Two years ago, McCarran opened a new terminal (T3), which has further enhanced the airport’s ability to accommodate international flights. Fortunately, we have seen an increase in international traffic. We have also seen a 30% increase in General Aviation flights this year, some of which are arriving from foreign countries. Accordingly, I write in support of McCarran’s application to participate in the Reimbursable Services Program. Authorized by the recent Consolidated Appropriations Act, this program allows CBP to enter into public-private partnerships. If accepted into this program, McCarran would reimburse CBP for costs associated with increasing CBP hours of operation and services at LAS. Increasing CBP hours of operation at the airport will increase capacity for international travelers and benefit our local economy. I thank you for your time and request that you carefully review McCarran’s application for the Reimbursable Services Program because expediting processing of foreign air traffic is critical for our local economy. Sincerely, Dina Titus |
