Contrary to the President’s claims, no one is above the law. August 21, 2018 “Contrary to the President’s claims, no one is above the law,” said Representative Titus. “The evidence was clear, and the jury rightfully convicted Mr. Manafort of eight felony charges including tax fraud, failure to report a foreign bank account, and bank fraud. Should the President follow through on his comments regarding a potential presidential pardon in this case, it should be viewed as a subversion of justice. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation has broad authority to examine and root out crimes related to Russian interference in the 2016 campaign, collusion with that interference, and other matters that might arise from this investigation. The President’s singular focus has never been about getting to the bottom of this investigation and ensuring the sanctity of our election system but discrediting it and undermining our democratic institutions. Congressional Republicans either parrot the president’s lies or simply stay silent. Any action taken by this President, Congressional Republicans, or others to interfere, undermine, or influence this investigation is an obstruction of justice, plain and simple.” ### |
