From background checks to bump stocks, Republican leaders have blocked every effort to take meaningful action on gun violence. December 18, 2018 Las Vegas, NV – Today Representative Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District issued the following statement in response to the final rule released by the Department of Justice to ban bump stock devices under the National Firearms Act of 1934: “The President seems to be more interested in making headlines than making progress,” said Representative Titus, a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. “We know that his proposal will likely be tied up in the courts and that Congress has to step up and provide the authority to the BATF to ensure any regulatory effort actually works. That is why this Congress I joined my colleagues in introducing the bipartisan Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act. From background checks to bump stocks, Republican leaders have blocked every effort to take meaningful action on gun violence. I am committed to this fight and am working with my colleagues in introducing legislation that will ensure these efforts are not a vanity project. It is my hope the Administration will support our efforts to get this right.” Following the tragedy of the 1 October massacre that killed 58 in the heart of the Nevada’s First Congressional District, Representative Titus joined Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI), and Rep. David Trott (R-MI) in introducing the Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act. In December of 2017, Rep. Titus filed an amendment with the House Rules Committee that would have provided the authority to the BATF to regulate bump stocks and similar devices. That amendment was blocked by Republicans on the Committee. ### |
