This has to be the beginning, not the end, of our work to confront the serious social justice issues, including racial disparity, that are not solved with passage of this legislation. December 20, 2018 Today Representative Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District released the following statement on passage of the Senate Amendment to S. 756, also known as the First Step Act: “The First Step Act is just that, a first step,” said Representative Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District. “This legislation is an improvement on the bill that I could not support in the House earlier this year. One of my major concerns at that time was the lack of action on sentencing reform, which has been addressed in this Senate Amendment. This has to be the beginning, not the end, of our work to confront the serious social justice issues, including racial disparity, that are not solved with passage of this legislation. This effort must be comprehensive and include the states where there are more than 2 million prisoners, as well as education, workforce development, and health care agencies to help address the numerous factors that contribute to the United States having the largest prison population in the world.” ### |
