Today Representative Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District voted to pass the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021.
“This legislation will provide a well-deserved pay raise to our troops,” said Congresswoman Titus (NV-1). “This bill also includes several major victories for Nevadans. I am proud to have led the entire Nevada delegation in protecting jobs in the Nevada National Guard. The heroes in our state’s National Guard defend our country and continue to play a pivotal role in pandemic response.
“Additionally, every Nevadan should be proud of the way our delegation worked with conservation groups to safeguard the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Its iconic wildlife, scenic beauty, and cultural relics will be protected for future generations to enjoy and explore.”
The bipartisan, bicameral FY 2021 National Defense Authorization Act:
Safeguards the Desert National Wildlife Refuge by blocking a proposal that would have removed over 300,000 acres from the Refuge for military operations.
Allows the Nevada National Guard to Retain Military Technicians by eliminating language in the NDAA passed by the Senate that could have resulted in the involuntary terminations of at least 161 military technicians in the Nevada National Guard. Congresswoman Titus sent a letter signed by the bipartisan, bicameral Nevada delegation to remove the concerning language in the Senate NDAA.
Protects the Health and Safety of Nevadans by eliminating language in the NDAA passed by the Senate that would have provided new funds to conduct explosive nuclear testing. The bipartisan, bicameral NDAA provides no such funds.
Reduces Threats of Weapons of Mass Destruction Around the World by requiring the federal government to report on and prioritize its work to keep weapons of mass destruction out of terrorists’ reach and reducing the global supply of weapons of mass destruction through an amended provision introduced by Congresswoman Titus.
Honors Cold Warriors by encouraging the Secretary of Defense to establish a service medal to award radiation-exposed veterans.
Cares for Veterans Exposed to Agent Orange by expanding the V.A. list of possible illnesses caused by Agent Orange exposure to include Parkinson’s disease, bladder cancer, and hypothyroidism and requiring the V.A. to provide benefits to veterans with those conditions who were exposed to Agent Orange.
Empowers Victims of Sexual Harassment in the Military by allowing such victims to confidentially submit a claim to someone outside their immediate chain of command.
Gives Our Troops a Pay Raise by authorizing a 3 percent military pay increase and investing in housing improvements for military members and families.
Provides for Removing the Names of Confederates from Our Military Bases by creating an independent commission to make binding recommendations on modifying or removing all names, symbols, and displays that honor the Confederacy or any person who served voluntarily with the Confederacy.
