February 21, 2013 Las Vegas, NV - Today, Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District hosted a roundtable discussion on immigration at the Paradise Park Community Center in Las Vegas. The forum included leaders who shared their perspectives on the current immigration system and discussed progress being made in Washington to pass a comprehensive immigration bill. “Fixing our broken immigration system remains one of our nation’s most urgent challenges. But, in order to move forward with meaningful and sensible reform in Washington, we must first build a consensus within our community," Congresswoman Titus said. "At today's forum, I gained valuable insight on many different issues related to immigration. While everyone brought a different perspective to the table, we all agreed that we need real immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship. I look forward to continuing to discuss this important issue with residents of Southern Nevada." Today’s forum brought together leaders from across the First District of Nevada including non-profit organizations, representatives from several Chambers of Commerce, members of the clergy, organized labor and leaders from various ethnic communities across Southern Nevada. Participants shared their ideas on a range of issues related to immigration reform, including the various proposals currently being considered in Washington. In commending Congresswoman Titus' community roundtable on immigration, Congressman Gutierrez (IL-04), Chairman of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus said, "The politics, policies, the President, and the American people are all pointing in the right direction to fix our immigration system and pass legislation this year. Representative Titus is bringing the voice of her constituents in Nevada to the debate in Washington. Now is the time for everyone to make their voice heard and help us keep things moving forward in a positive way towards sensible reform." Congresswoman Titus is a longtime advocate for comprehensive immigration reform, and is an original cosponsor of the DREAM Act set to be reintroduced in the House of Representatives in the near future. Since the beginning of the 113th Congress, Titus has been actively involved in on-going discussions aimed at passing a comprehensive reform bill, and plans to take the insight gained from today’s forum back with her to Washington. In response to today’s forum in Nevada’s First District, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said, “I commend Congresswoman Dina Titus for her leadership in bringing the people of Nevada’s First Congressional District together to discuss commonsense immigration reform. We must fix our broken immigration system to work for our country, our economy, and our families. To do that successfully we must listen to our communities and engage them in meaningful dialogue. Representative Titus will play an important role as Congress moves to enact smart, sensible immigration laws.”
