January 16, 2015 Las Vegas, NV - Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District released the following statement in response to the announcement that the Supreme Court of the United States will consider four cases challenging state bans on same-sex couples marrying, and bans on recognition of same-sex marriages from other states. “This is an important step towards recognizing that all Americans deserve equality under the law. These cases may very well decide that no loving couple can be denied the right to have their commitment legally recognized and respected by their government regardless of where they live. I am confident, as the Supreme Court has ruled previously, that equality will win out over bigotry. As the Supreme Court moves forward with these cases, I will continue to advocate in Congress for equality and justice for LGBT families.” A member of the House Equality Caucus, sponsor of the Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act, and cosponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, the Employee Non-Discrimination Act, and the Student Non-Discrimination Act, Congresswoman Titus has been a leading advocate for LGBT rights in Congress. |
