Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District released the following statement in strong opposition to H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. Current law restricts the use of federal funding for abortion services, except in the extreme circumstances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. H.R. 7 goes further by restricting women from using private dollars to purchase private insurance for comprehensive health coverage, including reproductive care.

“This bill drastically undermines a woman’s constitutional right to choose, and effectively eliminates access to reproductive care for low-income women across the country,” said Titus. “It also hurts small businesses finally starting to recover from the Great Recession by raising taxes on those employers who offer female employees comprehensive health insurance.

“Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated a lack of understanding about basic women’s healthcare, and this bill is one more example of their continuing attack on a woman’s right to make the best decision for herself, her health, and her family,” continued Titus. “It is nothing more than an attempt by House Republicans to distract from the critical work that needs to be done to create jobs, invest in infrastructure, and strengthen the middle-class. Less than three weeks into the new Congress, and House Republicans have failed to act on any of these economic priorities choosing instead to deport DREAMers, separate families, and attack a woman’s right to choose.”
