Congresswoman Dina Titus released the following statement today on the passage of H.R. 2609, FY 2014 Energy and Water Appropriations Act. July 10, 2013 Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District released the following statement today on the passage of H.R. 2609, FY 2014 Energy and Water Appropriations Act. The $30.4 billion bill cuts $2.9 billion from the enacted level for FY 2013 — $4.1 billion below President Obama’s budget request and more than $550 million below the post-sequester FY 2013 funding level. The bill cuts 60 percent of clean energy initiatives as well as significantly reduces funds devoted to clean energy research and development and nuclear non-proliferation activities. Titus voted against the Act due to these damaging cuts. Titus offered an amendment to the bill that would have struck the bill's language that resurrects the failed Yucca Mountain project. The amendment was defeated, despite the Department of Energy's bipartisan Blue Commission on America's Nuclear Future 2012 report that called for a new strategy to the safe disposal of the nation's nuclear waste. "This bill is a step backward in our country's efforts to be a world leader in clean, renewable energy and stymies our potential for economic growth, job creation, energy independence, and global economic competitiveness," said Titus. "Instead of allowing a serious debate over the safe disposal of the nation’s nuclear waste, this bill tries to turn back the clock on the failed Yucca Mountain project. It’s time to develop an alternative plan that doesn’t throw away billions of taxpayer money, endanger citizens’ safety, or threaten potential economic development projects in Southern Nevada.” |
