It is fitting that we honor the legacy of Maude Frazier and her contributions to the Las Vegas Valley. Her fortitude and pioneer spirit are inspirational and set an example for every Nevadan, especially the women of our state who continue to fight their way into state houses, schoolboards, classrooms, board rooms, and the U.S. Congress. July 11, 2018 Today Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District announced that the House Natural Resources Committee unanimously passed H.R. 577, legislation authored by the Congresswoman to name a peak on Frenchman Mountain for Nevada’s first female Lieutenant Governor and education leader, Maude Frazier. “Maude Frazier moved to Nevada to teach in some of our most rural and remote mining camps and towns at the turn of the last century,” said Congresswoman Titus. “From those humble beginnings she rose to the role of superintendent of schools overseeing education in four counties, including Clark County where she served as principal of Las Vegas High School for nearly 20 years. Ms. Frazier then headed to Carson City serving in the Nevada State Assembly, including a decade as Chairwoman of the Education Committee where she secured the funding for Southern Nevada’s first public college which became the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her name adorned the first building on the UNLV campus which was demolished in 2009. In 1962 Maude Frazier was appointed to fill the position of Lieutenant Governor, becoming the highest-ranking woman in the state’s history. Congress.” The legislation now awaits consideration on the floor of the House of Representatives. |
