Las Vegas, NV – Today Representative Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District celebrated the House Appropriation Committee’s passage of the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2021. 

The bill includes:

• No tax dollars to revitalize the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste project
• The PLANET Act, which prevents the Trump Administration from conducting an explosive nuclear weapons test
• A prohibition on additional transfers of plutonium from South Carolina to Nevada 

“As we continue to combat this pandemic and suffer from record unemployment rates, Nevada could use some good news,” said Congresswoman Titus (NV-1). “We have once again defeated the dangerous attempts to make our state the dumping ground for the nation’s waste. President Trump tried for three years to shove nuclear waste down our throats and this year his allies didn’t put up much of a fight. 

“Instead, President Trump threatened our state by moving toward conducting an explosive nuclear test. I’m proud to have led the effort in the House of Representatives to stop him. Conducting an explosive nuclear weapons test would give Russia and China reason to do the same while needlessly putting Nevadans’ health at risk. President Trump should talk to the officials at the Department of Energy who have used sophisticated tools to repeatedly certify that our nuclear stockpile is safe and reliable.

In June, Congresswoman Titus introduced the PLANET Act to prevent the Trump Administration from conducting an explosive nuclear weapons test. Shortly after, Congresswoman Titus urged the House Appropriations Committee to advance the PLANET Act through the appropriations process and include no funding to revitalize the Yucca Mountain project.
