Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District joined with Republican Congressman Rodney Davis (D-IL) to reintroduce the bipartisan Innovation in Surface Transportation Act to provide greater access for local communities when it comes to transportation investments. Today, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Roger Wicker (R-MS) introduced the Senate companion to the Titus legislation.

“It is essential that our local communities have a seat at the table when these critical decisions are made,” said Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-NV). “In Las Vegas, and cities across the country, the ability to move people and goods safely and efficiently is critical to all aspects of our economy. Empowering major businesses, travel and tourism authorities, and local entities as part of the process will ensure that projects reflect the economic development priorities in our communities.”

The Innovation in Surface Transportation Act will empower local communities to have a greater say in transportation investments. The legislation sets aside a portion of funding that state departments of transportation receive for an in-state, competitive grant program for transportation projects for local communities. Funding decisions for the grants would be made by a new board representing state and local leaders, as well as business organizations, travel and tourism authorities, bike and pedestrian safety groups, and others who are impacted by transportation decisions, but are not currently at the table when decisions about investments are made.

Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Bob Casey (D-PA) are original cosponsors of the Senate version of the Innovation in Surface Transportation Act. Additional House cosponsors include Representatives Gregg Harper (R-MS), Cheri Bustos (D-IL), Dan Lipinski (D-IL), and Matt Cartwright (D-PA). This legislation has received support from the AARP, League of American Bicyclists, and The National Center for Safe Routes to School.
