LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Trump administration says it has reunified 1,500 children separated from their parents at the U.S. southern border, part of the administration’s “zero-tolerance” crackdown on illegal immigration rolled out this spring.

However, 711 other children remain in custody.

Some of those 700 have parents who have already been deported, or parents who cannot be found, or who are not considered eligible for reunification because of criminal backgrounds or other issues.

“I am concerned that when they say everybody's been reunited, we are not getting the full story,” says Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nevada.

Titus is an administration skeptic, very critical of the border crackdown that separated immigrant families in the first place.

“When they first put this no tolerance policy in place, they did it without any forethought of how they were gonna reunite families,” Titus tells me.

That is why local activists like Viridana Vidal stepped in, part of a citizen network now working to bring undocumented parents and children together.

“I have been working with, like, 300 families. So far, we have helped, I have been working, personally, with 5 cases,” Vidal says.

This past Sunday, in Orlando, Vidal helped one boy get reunited with a grandma in this country he has never met. The boy and his father were separated at the border in San Diego. His dad has already been deported.

“His mother was killed by MS-13 when he was 8; now he's 11. So his father felt that his kid was in danger so he decided to leave Honduras,” Vidal says.

This week, News 3 learned some border parents have been detained in Southern Nevada.

One father was kept at the Henderson Detention Center before being sent to Texas.

As first reported by The Nevada Independent and later confirmed by News 3, he has now been reunited with his 5-year-old daughter.
