Reno Gazette Journal: Titus becomes first House Democrat from Nevada to call for Trump impeachment inquiry

U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., is calling for an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, joining a growing number of House Democrats seeking the president’s ouster despite resistance from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., is calling for an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, joining a growing number of House Democrats seeking the president’s ouster despite resistance from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Titus is the first member of Nevada’s congressional delegation to add to the burgeoning pro-impeachment caucus, explaining in video posted to Twitter that she took the step because of “mounting evidence that Donald Trump has repeatedly broken the law to protect his own interests.”

“To be clear, misleading the public and the press is not an impeachable offense,” the longtime Las Vegas congresswoman said in a Monday statement. “But lying to law enforcement officials who are investigating the Russian attack on our democracy – and ordering his staff to do the same – are serious crimes."

Titus said she also plans to step up a House oversight investigation into Trump’s real estate holdings after a January inspector general’s report found he hadn’t adequately separated himself from his family’s business interests.

“And on its own, greed is not an impeachable offense," she said in a statement. "But after his election, Donald Trump refused to divest from his businesses despite obvious conflicts of interests. So now he’s profiting from foreign government officials who are trying to curry favor by staying at his hotels – even though the emoluments clause of the Constitution prevents the President from accepting foreign payments."

Titus joins at least 105 other House Democrats pushing Pelosi to open formal impeachment proceedings. The California congresswoman has long cautioned against such a move, pointing to public opinion polls that show lackluster support for impeaching Trump.

Fellow Southern Nevada representatives Susie Lee and Steven Horsford did not immediately return requests for comment on the move. Both are among a thinning majority of House Democrats who have balked at taking steps toward removing Trump from office.
