July 15, 2014 Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District released the following statement today on the passage of H.R. 5021, the Highway and Transportation Funding Act, which would reauthorize Map-21for eight months and provide an additional $10.8 billion to the Highway Trust Fund to ensure federal funding is available to meet infrastructure needs through Spring of next year. Titus spoke on the House Floor today to call for a long-term transportation authorization that meets the needs of our growing nation. “For some 700,000 workers in the construction industry, including roughly 6,000 in Nevada, this is welcome news,” said Titus, member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. “Nonetheless, the short-term fix is only a Band-Aid on a sore that continues to fester. For businesses, state departments of transportation, local governments, and transit authorities, this kind of unpredictability, which has become fairly common in Congress, hurts our economy and the ability for the public and private sectors to plan to meet our nation’s needs. The clock is ticking, but there is still time to act to avoid a manufactured crisis again next year. If we work together, put all funding options on the table, and consult with stakeholders, we can get serious about building needed infrastructure, creating jobs, and investing in our future.” |
