Titus Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Washington, DC,
May 20, 2015
May 20, 2015 Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District released the following statement today marking Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This morning, Titus spoke on the House Floor to recognize the many contributions the Asian American and Pacific Islander community has made to Southern Nevada. Watch her remarks here: “Asian Pacific Americans comprise the fastest growing minority group in Las Vegas, having doubled in number between 2000 and 2010. They have a powerful history of impressive cultural, social, political, and economic contributions to the region. “I am proud to represent District One which is home to the largest Asian American and Pacific Islander community in Nevada. Asian Pacific Americans’ achievements in arts, technology, business, and education serve as a reminder that our nation’s success is built upon the foundation of diversity. “This exciting diversity is particularly evident in the way that the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have shaped and contributed to the First District. The Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce facilitated the re-invigoration of the Las Vegas economy after the crash of 2008; Chinatown Plaza on Spring Mountain Road is home to one of the most popular Chinese New Year celebrations in the country; the thriving Filipino district along Maryland Parkway represents the rich culture and tradition of Nevada’s rapidly growing Filipino-American community; vibrant Korea Town Plaza is home to some of the best Korean food in the country; and dozens of Thai, Japanese, and Vietnamese shops, restaurants, markets, and festivals enrich our society and strengthen our economy. “As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, let us remember that the values, talent, and investments that immigrants from around the world bring to our community have profound and positive effects on our quality of life. We must recognize how much we all stand to gain from enacting comprehensive immigration reform that honors our country's legacy as the ‘land of opportunity.’ We don’t simply benefit from the myriad contributions of immigrants, we thrive and flourish because of them.” |
