KLAS: Gov. Sisolak, Rep. Titus speak at rally on anti-Asian violence

“But they need to, they need to make us aware. They’ve got our support, you saw Congresswoman Dina Titus here, Metro with us. We’re doing everything we can to make sure everyone in this community, as in everyone in Nevada, feels safe.”

On Thursday, Governor Sisolak and state leaders joined forces to show support and call for an end to violence against Asian communities across the nation.

Crowds of people gathered at the Chinatown Plaza on Spring Mountain Road Thursday afternoon, along with the governor and other representatives.

The core message was to end all violence against the Asian community. This comes after the recent mass shooting in Atlanta that killed six women of Asian descent, as well as various attacks in the San Francisco Bay area.

More than 100 people gathered Thursday, carrying signs with messages saying, “love conquers hate,” “we need peace” and “stop Asian hate.”

Representatives from various community groups were on hand, as well as Congresswoman Dina Titus, Governor Steve Sisolak and First Lady Kathy Sisolak.

Many spoke about the importance of education when it comes to ending discrimination, as well as the importance of reporting these crimes when they happen.

“Unfortunately this community, for a couple reasons, the language barrier they don’t often report things. So, a lot of crimes against the community go unreported. Two, that they kind of just don’t want to ‘rock the boat,’” Governor Sisolak said. “But they need to, they need to make us aware. They’ve got our support, you saw Congresswoman Dina Titus here, Metro with us. We’re doing everything we can to make sure everyone in this community, as in everyone in Nevada, feels safe.”

To further that effort, Congresswoman Titus says she is working to pass a law to enhance penalties for hate crimes against Asian Americans.

Titus represents District 1, which includes this area of Spring Mountain Road. She says the Asian-Pacific community is the fastest growing group in her district.

This rally followed a roundtable discussion, where law enforcement condemned the uptick in violence. Now, local authorities are calling on the community to report these crimes as they’re happening.
