Washington, DC, July 20, 2022 | Sara Severens (202-924-1719)
“I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support proposals that save taxpayers money, maximize efficiency in the federal government, and provide real support for communities seeking assistance after disasters.”

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01), Chair of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management, issued the following statement after this week’s committee business meeting. Rep. Titus is a sponsor of two bills that passed out of committee.

“I am proud that both of my common-sense bills passed with bipartisan support today,” said Rep. Titus. “I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support proposals that save taxpayers money, maximize efficiency in the federal government, and provide real support for communities seeking assistance after disasters.”

Background

H.R. 7636, BRIGHT Act

  • The BRIGHT Act will produce significant taxpayer savings by prioritizing energy-efficient and cost-effective lighting in public buildings. Estimates show that simply replacing compact fluorescent downlight lamps and linear fluorescent lamps with LEDs in public buildings could save taxpayers up to $15.6 million annually. The bill also directs the General Services Administration (GSA) to provide guidance on advancing these priorities in State, local, and Tribal buildings in order to achieve savings at all levels of government.

The BRIGHT Act’s Senate companion was sponsored by Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), voted out of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) on November 3, 2021, and passed out of the Senate by unanimous consent on March 30, 2022.

H.R. 8416, Disaster Survivors Fairness Act of 2022

  • This legislation simplifies the process for seeking assistance following a major disaster, expands communities’ access to hazard mitigation assistance so they can build resiliency for the future, and saves taxpayer dollars by ensuring the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) resources are going to those who need it most.

Introduced by Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) and Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA) and co-sponsored by Reps. Jenniffer González-Colón (R-Puerto Rico) and Troy Carter (D-LA).
