Titus Statement on Bureau of Reclamation Requesting Emergency Water Cuts

Las Vegas, NV, August 17, 2022 | Sara Severens (202-924-1719)
“I will continue to work to combat receding water levels in Lake Powell and Lake Mead so that we can ensure the sustainability of Nevada communities.”

LAS VEGAS, NV – Today Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01) issued the following statement after the announcement from the Bureau of Reclamation requesting water cuts for Nevada, Arizona, and Mexico:

“I am disappointed that western states along the Colorado River could not come to an agreement on reduced water usage for the region. Meanwhile, Nevada has been a leader in implementing sensible water conservation measures that use less water despite our tremendous growth.

“Due to the current impasse, I join Southern Nevada Water Authority General Manager John Entsminger in respectfully requesting that the Department of Interior create new beneficial use criteria, among other things, that would eliminate wasteful practices.

“Yesterday, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law which provides $4 billion to the Colorado River Basin for conservation and drought mitigation efforts. I urge the DOI to make this funding available as soon as possible. Together with the Facilitating Large-Scale Water Recycling and Reuse Projects Act, which was included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, real improvements can be realized.

“I will continue to work to combat receding water levels in Lake Powell and Lake Mead so that we can ensure the sustainability of Nevada communities.”
