Titus Statement on Announcement of TSA Training and Development Center in Las Vegas

“This new training center will boost the security capabilities of TSA and train new agents in advanced skills critical to airport security. It will also improve TSA agent staffing shortages and address morale issues which we have seen impact air travel in recent years."

LAS VEGAS, NV – Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01) issued the following statement after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced it has executed a new 15-year lease for its Training and Development Academy West (Academy West) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“As travel rates to and from Las Vegas and airports across the U.S. increase, I’m excited to hear about this announcement from TSA,” said Rep. Titus. “This new training center will boost the security capabilities of TSA and train new agents in advanced skills critical to airport security. It will also improve TSA agent staffing shortages and address morale issues which we have seen impact air travel in recent years.

“As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, I have maintained a working relationship with the Transportation Security Administration and its agents on the front lines throughout my time in Congress. I will continue to partner with them to increase efficiency and reliability of travel, improve threat mitigation, and encourage greater tourism to Southern Nevada.”

Background

When built out, the new lease will be for 27,318 square feet of training and office space on airport property at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). Academy West will train TSA personnel from 12 states, including 91 airports. The facility, which is TSA’s second training center in the U.S. for Transportation Security Officers, is expected to be completed by Spring 2023.
