Las Vegas, NV – Today Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01) announced $750,000 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada.

“As a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I was proud to help shape and pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” said Rep. Titus. “Many parts of the valley have experienced recent cases of extreme heat islands which threaten the safety and well-being of our community and its infrastructure. This funding, which comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will help the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada with resiliency efforts to prepare our infrastructure for unforeseen crises and extreme weather events.”

“This is a very timely and relevant issue that affects our region’s resiliency, as well as the safety of residents and visitors who use our transportation network,” said MJ Maynard, RTC CEO. “We are thankful for Rep. Titus’ continued support that will allow us to address potential climate vulnerabilities, such as extreme heat. With PROTECT funds, the RTC’s Metropolitan Planning Organization will work with regional partners to identify projects needed to harden transportation infrastructure, coordinate services and programs in support of people most vulnerable to extreme heat, and develop emergency response plans.”

Background
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada will receive $750,000 to complete a Resilience Improvement Plan that assesses the vulnerabilities of the region’s highways, major roadways, public transportation system, freight system, and anticipated passenger rail through 2050. The plan will help manage risks associated with aging infrastructure against a full range of current and future weather events, including extreme heat and natural disasters.

This Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Funding is coming from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-Saving Transportation (PROTECT) Discretionary Grant Program.

The PROTECT program provides funding to ensure surface transportation resilience to natural hazards including climate change, sea level rise, flooding, extreme weather events, and other natural disasters through support of planning activities, resilience improvements, community resilience and evacuation routes, and at-risk coastal infrastructure.

Rep. Titus championed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law as a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
