Black Friday marks two weeks on the picket line for Virgin Hotels Las Vegas workers
Las Vegas, NV,

On Black Friday, two weeks into the strike, a Nevada Congresswoman walked the picket line with workers. Spending the Thanksgiving holiday weekend on the sidewalk in front of the hotel, hundreds of striking workers and union members are maintaining 24/7 picket lines at every entrance of Virgin. “Respect the workers! Don’t be a scab! Don’t be a loser! Don’t play or eat at Virgin Hotels!,” was screamed through a megaphone. Workers are pushing for a new five-year union contract including Pamela Holmes who has been working at the hotel for 15 years and has been on the picket line since day one. “We were out here for F1. You see all of those people come in, a lot of people drive by and give us that honk and support us,” shared Holmes. Holmes told FOX5 it feels strange to be spending everyday outside now even bring her granddaughter to her temporary workplace. Friday, Congresswoman Dina Titus also joined the fight. “You should only have to have one job to make it for your family and you should have a fair contract,” Titus argued. “I do have a family,” shared Jesse Cole a cook at the hotel who works three jobs and has still managed to take part in the strike every day including Thanksgiving. “There’s times where I think I am at risk of a losing a job because the three jobs and the scheduling can’t combine,” Cole explained. Virgin’s contract with the Culinary Union expired on in the summer of 2023. Employees have been working without one ever since. The union says every other hotel in Las Vegas has reached a contract agreement and is now condemning Virgin for relying on temporary workers to keep the hotel open as union workers remain committed to staying on the picket line. “As long as it takes for us to get our contract,” Cole contended. “If we need to close this place to get that contract, I am ready for that,” Holmes asserted. |
