Today I voted against the House Republicans’ extreme and unconscionable budget plan. It makes massive cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and education programs to pay for $2 trillion in tax breaks for big corporations and the ultrawealthy. The richest 0.1% will get an average annual tax cut of $314,266 at the expense of working families in my district and across the country already struggling to make ends meet.
More than 200,000 people in Nevada’s first district on Medicaid are at risk of losing their health care coverage, including 96,000 children and 16,000 seniors. Five out of eight seniors rely on Medicaid to pay their nursing home costs. What will happen to them? An additional 23,000 of my constituents who receive health care under the Affordable Care Act would see their premiums increase by an average of $3,690 a year. How will they pay the extra $305 per month? The Republican plan also takes away assistance for families struggling with food insecurity, including 195,000 people in my district who count on SNAP and thousands of Clark County School District students who receive free school meals. Pell grants and student loan subsidies which make higher education accessible for thousands of Nevadans also are on the chopping block. Each dollar taken away from children, seniors, and families will go directly into billionaires’ pockets. That’s cruel and wrong. I will continue to do everything I can to protect my constituents, including pushing back on DOGE’s attacks on our federal workers. I proposed an amendment to the Republican’s budget to block DOGE’s funding, but Speaker Mike Johnson was so afraid of having a real debate on his unpopular budget that he did not allow any amendments to be considered. Now Johnson and every Republican who voted for this resolution or stayed silent as DOGE attacked essential services will face their constituents who do not want these cuts. |
