Today Representative Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District celebrated the House passage of a government spending bill that included no funding for Yucca Mountain, a ban on explosive nuclear weapons testing, and several other of her key priorities.

The spending package, H.R. 7617, is the second set of FY 2021 appropriations bills that the House has considered this year and it includes six spending bills: Defense, Commerce-Justice-Science, Energy and Water Development, Financial Service and General Government, Labor-HHS-Education, and Transportation-Housing and Urban Development.

“After trying to shove nuclear waste down Nevada’s throat for three years in a row, President Trump backed down from the fight,” said Congresswoman Titus (NV-1). “I will continue to work with my colleagues in House leadership and the Nevada delegation to prevent our state from becoming the dumping ground for the nation’s nuclear and toxic waste.

“Today the House of Representatives voted to prevent the President from needlessly conducting an explosive nuclear weapons test. I did not introduce this ban lightly, but it was necessary to prevent President Trump from recklessly threatening Nevadans’ health and potentially restarting a global arms race.

“This spending package includes many important provisions to protect public health and help bring about our nation’s economic recovery. The Senate should take immediate action to help make it law.”

Congresswoman Titus was especially pleased to help secure funding for many of her key legislative priorities including:

  • Zero funding to revitalize the dangerous Yucca Mountain project
  • Language introduced by Congresswoman Titus in the PLANET Act to ban explosive nuclear weapons testing
  • A provision requested by Congresswoman Titus to prohibit funds to be used for the shipment of weapons-grade plutonium from South Carolina to Nevada
  • An amendment supported by Congresswoman Titus that prohibits the Trump Administration from weakening the Affordable Care Act through the judicial system
  • An amendment supported by Congresswoman Titus to prevent the Department of Justice from interfering in Nevada’s cannabis market
  • Language co-sponsored by Congresswoman Titus to allow legal cannabis businesses to engage in commerce with financial institutions
  • Language introduced by Congresswoman Titus in the Democracy in Design Act to prevent the Trump Administration from carrying out any executive order that would mandate a national architectural style for federal buildings
  • An amendment co-sponsored by Congresswoman Titus to overturn the Trump Administration’s prohibition on transgender individuals serving in the military
  • A ban on the use of funds appropriated to the Department of Defense for the construction of the border wall
  • $356 million for the Economic Development Agency which is a $23 million increase from FY 2020. Congresswoman Titus chairs the Subcommittee on Economic Development
  • $155 million for Hispanic Serving Institutions like UNLV and CSN as requested requested by Congresswoman Titus
