'City' is a seminal contemporary artwork and will now be protected within the borders of Basin and Range National Monument. December 15, 2016 Titus Applauds BLM Move to Protect ‘City’ The land is home to “City,” one of the most important pieces of contemporary artworks in history. Nevada artist Michael Heizer has spent nearly 50 years of his life on the project which will now share the same protections as the desert landscapes and wildlife within Basin and Range National Monument. “Today’s announcement is a significant step in the preservation of this important piece of art and the conservation of a special piece of our nation’s public lands,“ said Rep. Titus, who championed the effort to designate the Basin and Range National Monument. “The landscapes of Basin and Range and ‘City’ deserve to stand together in the desert, representing the nexus of public art and public space for generations to come.” |
