Today Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District introduced the Veterans National Remembrance Act to ensure all veterans have the option of being buried in a national veterans' cemetery located in their home state, developed and maintained to the high standards of the VA’s national cemetery program. Eleven states, home to 1.3 million veterans, are currently without access to a national veterans' cemetery, including Nevada. The Veterans National Remembrance Act directs the VA Secretary to give priority for establishing new cemeteries to states that do not have a national cemetery and to locate the new cemeteries near areas with large veteran populations.
“All those who have fought for our nation deserve the honor and dignity of being buried in a national cemetery, regardless of where they live. Sadly, over one million veterans, including 170,000 in Southern Nevada, do not have this option. Instead, these heroes are wrongly forced to decide between being laid to rest in a national veterans’ cemetery outside of their state, or being buried in a different type of cemetery closer to their current home. The Veterans National Remembrance Act would ensure all veterans have the prestigious option of being buried in a true national cemetery located in their home state.”
