Titus Issues Statement on Zinke's Leaked Plan on Monuments

August 24, 2017
Zinke's leaked plan undermines transparency and the work of so many advocates who want to protect our public lands.

In response to leaks to the press regarding the Department of the Interior’s National Monuments review, Congresswoman Dina Titus, of Nevada’s 1st Congressional District released the following statement:

“This entire exercise claimed to be about bringing transparency and the public into how we protect our cultural and natural resources, yet today’s leaks to the press does neither. Secretary Zinke and President Trump have rather created more questions than answers and are ignoring the years of advocacy and hard word of thousands for the creation of Gold Butte, Basin and Range, and monuments across the United States. It does not take a legal expert to understand that the Administration does not have the authority to repeal a monument in its entirety, but so long as any monument is threatened, this is not a time to celebrate. Today I have filed an amendment to the Interior Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2018 which prohibits the Administration from making changes to designated national monuments. Whatever this secret report says, I am committed to defending these important places from the attacks of the Trump Administration.”
