Rep. Titus will host a workshop to help veterans and active military find jobs in the civilian workforce. July 21, 2016 Las Vegas – Today Congresswoman Dina Titus will host a workshop with local advocates to help prepare Nevada’s soldiers and veterans for successful careers in the civilian workforce. Officials from Work for Warriors Nevada, Valley Economic Development Centers, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, Vegas PBS, and the VA Southern Nevada HealthCare System will join Rep. Titus, local veterans and military members. The workshop will focus on resume building, transition of military skills, federal job applications, and job interviews. The workshop is part of a larger effort in the community to create more employment opportunities for Nevada’s 7,000 unemployed veterans. “The veteran unemployment rate is dropping, but 5.8 percent is still unacceptable,” Rep. Titus said. “We must work together -- government agencies, community organizations, and private businesses -- to help our nation’s heroes transition to civilian life and find good jobs that take advantage of and reward their training, skills, leadership qualities, and work ethic. In doing so, we will all benefit.” Background: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 495,000 unemployed veterans in 2015 – with 7,000 residing in Nevada. The unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty since September 2001 is currently at 5.8 percent of the workforce, a 1.4 percent drop from the previous year.
