Today Rep. Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District issued the following statement on House passage of H.R. 3219, the Make America Secure Appropriations Act, 2018, a $788 billion “security minibus” package of four appropriations bills: Defense, Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, Energy and Water, and the Legislative Branch. Rep. Titus opposed the legislation.

“This measure appeases President Trump at the expense of our safety, environment, and health. The bill includes $1.6 billion for an egregious and costly border wall, paid for by American taxpayers, not Mexico, despite President Trump’s repeated promises. Republicans stripped a bipartisan provision to rein in President Trump’s ability to use military force without Congressional authorization. The bill also eliminates vital clean energy research programs, cuts $1.1 billion for energy efficiency programs, and increases funding for development of dirty fossil fuels. Despite overwhelming bipartisan support, the GOP excluded an amendment I co-sponsored to allow VA doctors in states like Nevada which have legalized medical marijuana to discuss it as a treatment option. Furthermore, Republicans also continue to blindly support Yucca Mountain, blocking an amendment I co-sponsored to eliminate funding for the unworkable project. This appropriation bill is not a reflection of Nevada’s values nor does it protect Nevada’s interests.”
