Washington, D.C. – Today Rep. Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District released the following statement after co-sponsoring H.R. 5087, legislation to regulate the importation, manufacture, possession, sale, or transfer of assault weapons.

“In recent mass shootings in Las Vegas, Texas, and Florida, shooters used an assault weapon. Families in my district know all too well the power of these weapons in dangerous hands. They know that semi-automatic firearms with high-capacity feeding devices and military features are not necessary for sporting or self-defense. Congress has a duty to ensure the health and safety of the American people. These weapons of war have no place in our classrooms, concert venues, movie theaters, churches, and communities.”

BACKGROUND

This legislation will prohibit the sale, transfer, manufacture, and importation of semi-automatic weapons and ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than ten rounds, while protecting hunting and sporting rifles and assault weapons used by members of the military and law enforcement. This legislation will improve the previous Assault Weapons Ban and existing state bans by prohibiting duplicates or altered facsimiles with semiautomatic capabilities and the importation of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.
