Titus Statement on Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

'It's one step forward, but two steps back.'

Today Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01), a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on a bipartisan vote of 234-193.

Washington, DC – Today Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01), a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on a bipartisan vote of 234-193.

“The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is the first step towards desperately needed gun reform in our country. Most notably it closes the ‘boyfriend loophole’ which will significantly reduce the number of domestic violence incidents resulting in death by preventing people convicted of domestic violence from purchasing guns.

“This bill’s passage is in direct contrast to yesterday’s Supreme Court decision in the New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn., Inc. v. Bruen case which overturned a hundred-year-old law. This case strikes down the need to show ‘proper cause’ for concealed carry licenses as a violation of the Second Amendment, making it easier for people to carry handguns in public.

“I will continue to push for additional legislation that addresses priorities dropped by the Senate, including a ban on bump stocks which were used by the 1 October shooter in Las Vegas.”
